Movie Review: Flirting

Flirtingis a sweet film about a boy and girl who fall in love at a strict Australian boarding school. Both are eccentric outsiders disliked by their peers. She's from Uganda and her snobby prep school friends call her "jungle princess" and steadfastly refuse to include her in their circle. He's a gangly unattractive nerd. His classmates constantly humiliate him with pranks to distract them from the ruthless headmasters.

Because the girl's school is separated from the boy's school by a lake, they don't have many opportunities to see each other, so they spend most of their time flirting via letters, or skipping out of school events to snatch time together. Their romance is partly a coming of age story, but it's also about being true to oneself, no matter what gets in your way.

Flirting has wonderful character development, a romantic storyline and a wonderful scene where Thandie Newton's character uses lyrics from "Tootie Fruity" to win a debate, scandalize the entire school, make all the boys fall in love with her and leave Nicole Kidman seething with jealousy. (Proving that the hottest most popular girl isn't necessarily the sexiest.) I highly recommend it.

Have you seen any good movies lately?
