We roller skated our way out of NYC and into our nation's capital.
Josh had the brilliant idea of taking us to Empire Roller Rink (just around the corner from his Brooklyn apartment) and it was a perfect capper to a great week in New York City. This place is touted as "the birthplace of roller disco" and the subculture was alive and well. We were sad to hear that this rink is closing in about a month. Apparently it is the last roller rink the New York City area and three others have closed in the last six months. (A raise in property taxes perhaps? These things do take up a lot of valuable real estate...) There were two rinks; a bunny hill and the black diamond. People were really wizzing by and doing all sorts of fancy turns and tricks. It took awhile to get the hang of it, but it was so fun to watch people dancing around in their leg warmers and hot pants with roller skate wheels that lit up as they spun. There was great music blaring and lots of people having a fantastic time. I hope they find a way to keep "the fabric of their roll" going strong...
Now we're in our nation's capital interviewing up a storm and catching up with my brother and his lady friend. They are on spring break and it just couldn't be prettier here. The weather has been beautiful and we're just in time for the cherry blossoms. Life is good.
