We lived aboard three different airplanes for twenty four hours. We had four meals aboard and the folks at Northwest/KLM took wonderful care of us. We were as comfortable as we possibly could have been, and the security checks went much more smoothly than we were anticipating considering all of our electronic equipment. The layovers allowed us time to adjust our sleeping schedules and I am happy to report that we seem to have evaded jet lag (so far!).
All our luggage arrived right on time in Nairobi. Good thing too, as we had four monstrous pieces of checked baggage in addition to five crammed backpacks which we carried aboard. It was dark when we arrived, but our cab driver Moses was there with our name on a sign. The one very small snafu was that our apartment keys were not available and we had to go to a different hotel for the evening. We all fell straight to sleep and this morning we awoke to chirping birds and gorgeous flowers blooming all around us. There is bougainvillea everywhere and some beautiful purple flowering bush that I can’t identify and lots of jasmine and beautiful vine-y things curling wild everywhere. The birds are singing very loudly
We had a lovely breakfast of hard boiled eggs, toast and jam, tiny bananas and sausages along with some deliciously strong coffee; a nice surprise because we had read not to expect to find any decent coffee. (This declaration did strike us as odd since Kenya is famous for its coffee exports.) We managed to make Skype phone calls to our dear mothers, and were quite pleased with the results. It only costs seventeen cents a minute and it is free if they set up accounts as well. We were all surprised with how clear the connection is. So let’s just say this is all off to a very lovely start. We are going to use all of these great first impressions to build positive reserves and momentum, because Lord knows we will need it later.

My dear! Sounds like you have landed on your feet like the lovely feline creature you are. It's cold, we're expecting snow by morning, the ugly grey slushy kind. I'm just now recovering from the weekend, grocery shopping, breathing etc..saving the laundry and heavy lifting for what I expect to be a quiet weekend. I am just DEVOURING the Malaronia capers, please send other titles you have found interesting as I am joining a micro book club at the suggestion of my landscaper friend John. I brought the photo album to the dance party on Saturday to show off my beautiful children and we ended up talking about micro finance, malaria and history at length. In other news, we all voted on tuesday and I spent most of wednesday listening to NPR et al for results. Two very interesting pieces, one on the realignment of political parties that happened in the late 1800;s and another noting the traditional "falling away" that happens to a two term party during this election cycle and of course the big news about sec of defense. Locally it was very obvious that people were not voting the party line, is it too optomistic to think that voters are actually thinking about their votes?? Had wonderful dancing weekend.
