So and So Said: Marilyn's Philosophy

“I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you appreciate them when they’re right, you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself, and sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.” -Marilyn Monroe

What is it about her that is still so captivating after all this time? I've read several biographies about her, but none were able to explain the way she has remained fixed in our collective imagination for the last fifty years. I love the idea of learning to trust no one but yourself. That's a lesson I am still working on.

Karl Lagerfeld Advises Frugalistas

"Never use the word cheap. Today everybody can look chic in inexpensive clothes. There's good clothing design on every level today. You can be the chicest thing in the world in a t-shirt and jeans. It's up to you. Don't use inexpensive clothes as a screen for your personal doubts. Be proud of yourself and not only because you wear expensive designer clothes. They are great, but lots of people are happy without them. You come first, the clothes later. Reinvent new combinations of what you already own. Play with it. Improvise. Become more creative." - Karl Lagerfeld
Thanks to my Mum for sending this my way. It's the perfect way to think about your closet (and life), no matter what your budget.

An Adventurous Spirit

The question is, What are you proudest of?

I am proud of my adventurous spirit, which doesn't always come easily. And I'm proud to have a partner who challenges me to be my bravest, boldest self.

A Savage Journey into the Heart of the American Dream

I've just finished reading this book. (And watching this documentary too.) Here is my Etsy homage to Mr. Thompson. Click on the images to check out the listing.

“San Francisco in the middle sixties was a very special time and place to be a part of. Maybe it meant something. Maybe not, in the long run…but no explanations, no mix of words or music or memories can touch that sense of knowing that you were here and alive in that corner of time and the world. Whatever it meant…

History is hard to know, because of all the hired bullshit, but even without being sure of the “history” it seems entirely reasonable to think that every now and then the energy of a whole generation comes to a head in a long fine flash, for reasons that nobody really understands at the time- and which never explain, in retrospect, what actually happened… but being absolutely certain that no matter which way I went I would come to a place where people were just as high and wild as I was. No doubt at all about that. There was madness in any direction, at any hour. You could strike sparks anywhere.

There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning. And that, I think, was the handle- that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn’t need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting- on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave.

So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high water mark, that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.” -Hunter S. Thompson

May's Featured Etsy Blogger is Create a Thought!

Congratulations to this May's featured Etsy Blogger- Create a Thought. This quote is posted in her shop and I found it so inspiring:

"There are thousands of thoughts lying within a man that he does not know till he takes up the pen and writes. " ~William Makepeace Thackeray

Amen to that! Here's to soul searching via the pen and a wonderful month in the spotlight for Create a Thought.

Silly Postcards

Have a look at the vintage postcards I discovered at the Salvation Army! I think these will be deliciously kitschy office decor- each one framed and then arranged in a grid near my desk. My favorites are "Raise the Wages of Sin" and "Charmed Forces". What do you think- tacky or totally hilarious? Click to see them larger.
