Book Report: Last Train to Memphis

Eric and I walked down the aisle to "Love Me Tender" but I knew very little about Elvis' life when I picked up Last Train to Memphis. Its the first in Peter Guralncik's two part biography of the one and only Elvis Presley.

Today, it's almost impossible to listen to Elvis with fresh ears, so what I enjoyed about this book was the peek into his early life, his relationship with Sam Phillips at Sun Records and his stratospheric ascent to super stardom. The descriptions of his electric performances and the violet reactions of the crowds were fascinating and I found myself listening to his music with a whole new appreciation.

I've added a long list of Elvis' influences to my I-Pod and loads of Elvis movies to my Must Watch List. And I'm daydreaming about a pilgrimage to Graceland complete with a stay at a motel with a heart shaped hot tub and a picnic of peanut butter and banana sandwiches. And I've obviously been combing You Tube for clips of our hero in his prime. Here is in all his hunky glory on the Ed Sullivan Show. Dreamy!
