I've been spending a lot of time in my office lately, blogging, reading and making art, and what began as craft supply sorting morphed into a bigger project. I'm constantly re-organizing things all over the house in an attempt to weed out the unused things and make every task easier and more efficient (much to Eric's chagrin since it often leaves him unable to find things...)
I'd seen the idea of organizing books by color on artist Ashley G's blog, and I'm so happy with the way it turned our ratty collection of paperbacks into a beautiful prismatic display. Being in a temporary apartment with rented furniture leaves one without a lot of ways to add pizazz, so this was a perfect solution. (The Fira storage boxes on the right are from Ikea that I just decoupaged with old book pages. It seems like a lot of artists use these in their studios.)
This plaster branch coral sculpture is one of my favorite purchases I've made in Shenzhen (especially because it didn't destroy any actual branch coral). The Bloom print is by the very talented Yellena. We did a trade ages ago, and I just got it framed up and in a place of honor this weekend. Get a better look at her work here.
These little birds are actually a strange version of a yo yo that I bought from a little old man at a street market during Chinese New Year. He thought I was very strange for wanting two of them since I had no children accompanying me. (I wonder what he'd think of their new roost?) When you hold the string taut they dance and peck the ground. I love them.

Color coordinated books? Really? So you're telling me that if you wanted to find Adam Smith's "Wealth of Nations, Vol. II" you would not look in the S (for smith) section or the W (for wealth) section. You would have to look for in the off white or taupe section?

As you can see, my library here in China is far from vast, so its not really an organizational system so much as a decorative element. But I get that it may be a smidge ridiculous. Ah well, so am I. :)
I've always been fond of the taupe section. Everyone knows that's where the intellectuals go.
