Birthday Dumplin's
Eric and his mom haven't celebrated his Birthday together in years, so this trip to AZ was a perfect moment for them to make a perennial Nelson favorite: Sauerkraut and Dumplings. The preparation is a lot like those for Thanksgiving Day dinner; it isn't necessarily that difficult, it just takes up the entire day while the house slowly fills with the smell of roasting meat. The dumplings are made from bread cubes and a pork shoulder roasts with the sauerkraut to give it a rich meaty flavor. The last time we enjoyed this traditional Nelson dish was in Chicago when I attempted it, but there is always something about the way your mom makes, it isn't there? This is Diane's mom's recipe so its really was a special treat to have her cook it for us.
